Hello and a warm welcome to Penglais! We understand that the move from primary to secondary school can bring a variety of changes and challenges for all children. This section of the website aims to explain the process at Penglais and to answer some of your queries. We hope you find it useful.
The period of transition can be quite daunting for pupils (and parents/ guardians) and we aim to provide support and guidance to Year 6 and Year 7 students in order to make their transition and integration as easy as possible.
We are a very happy and successful school. Our pupils are challenged and motivated to achieve their full potential in a caring, supportive and inclusive environment.
In Year 7 there are 8 form groups and 8 teaching groups. Pupils register with their form tutor twice a day in their form group. Their form tutor will stay with the tutor group for their first five years at Penglais. They will build a relationship with their group and will be on hand to help, support and advise as pupils develop during their time with us.
Teaching groups are mixed ability and pupils will be taught as a Teaching group in most subjects. In Year 7 pupils are set in Maths and Welsh. Design and Technology groups are also different as the groups are slightly smaller as workshop space allows.
In November we hold an Open Evening giving you the opportunity to see what we do and to visit all departments and speak to staff. This is always a lively and enjoyable evening. There is an opportunity to hear from the Headteacher and to ask questions.
The date of the next Open Evening is :
Visits to Primary Schools
In the summer term the Pastoral team will visit all primary schools in order to speak to pupils and introduce the school. These visits are a really important part of the process as they allow us to get to know the pupils – and the pupils to get to know us.
We also take the opportunity to speak to Year 6 teachers and Senior Leaders at the primary schools in order to ensure that we know about our pupils and that we make appropriate arrangements for their transition to us.
Pupils are also asked at these visits to name two or three pupils that they know and might like to be in the same form group as them. We do our best to meet these requests in order to help pupils settle easily and quickly into their new school. However we cannot always accommodate these requests as we need to balance the pastoral and academic needs of students. We always listen really carefully to the advice from Y6 teachers to ensure our arrangements lead to great learning. It is also important to bear in mind that friendship groups develop and change and there is always an opportunity to make new friends at Penglais.
During these visits pupils will be given an information booklet and other relevant letters.
Induction Days - 27th and 28th June 2016
These are held in June and will be an opportunity for Year 6 pupils who have chosen to come to Penglais to spend two days with us. There will be an opportunity to meet the form tutor and to take part in activities. These include taster lessons in a wide range of subjects, activities and games and tours of the school.
On the afternoon of the 28th there will be a Transition Event in the early evening to which pupils and their families are invited. It will be an opportunity to get to know others in the Year Group and also to meet members of the PTA.
It is possible to get a grant from the Welsh Assembly to help with uniform costs, more information is available here.
