Penglais has a very vibrant and active Sixth Form where learners are valued and supported as individuals. We are extremely focused on our goal of providing every opportunity to our students to develop into well-rounded, well -qualified and active citizens.

Results in our Sixth Form are outstanding with the average grade being equivalent to AAB in 2016. 33% of our A level grades were A*-A and 85% of our students achieved 3 x A*-C grades. We are proud that our university applicants achieved 100% success with over half of them achieving places at the most prestigious universities. 3 have achieved their goal of gaining a place at medical school this year. On average only 0.5 students from over 200 schools in Wales gain a place at Oxford or Cambridge. 11 of our students received offers to study at Cambridge and Oxford between 2013 and 2015. 10 of our year 13 students have applied this to Oxbridge this year and we are hopeful of their success. They are very strong candidates.

Penglais Sixth Form prepares its students for higher education and employment through its wide range of activities and the access to specialist advice and support available.

We have an experienced and specialist team who work closely with our students on a daily basis to ensure that they receive the best possible support and advice for them as individuals.

We provide an impressive range of extra-curricular activities that broaden and enrich learners’ experiences. These include debate groups, voluntary work and work experience.

Penglais takes its role within the community very seriously and we believe that it is important to provide students with opportunities to experience the benefits of active citizenship. To date we have raised (add how much money raised for charity) through events run by our Sixth Form students. These activities contribute to our strong sense of community and provide students with challenges beyond the curriculum.

Message from the Head of Sixth Form:

Penglais Sixth Form is a happy, supportive and cosmopolitan environment in which to learn. We enjoy huge success and are immensely proud of our achievements to date.

We have some 300 learners in our Sixth Form, many of whom join us at the start of year 12 from other schools, so if you are considering joining us from another school you need not worry about being the only new one in September –there will be many others in the same situation and you will all settle in very quickly!

Most of our learners go on to university, with many securing places at some of the top Russell Group universities annually. 20 of our students have received offers to study at Cambridge and Oxford over the past 5 years. Our average point score in 2017 was the equivalent to ABB at A level.

Due to the cost of university, increasing numbers of students are making alternative choices to the university route. We provide a careers service and use the excellent links that we have with the wider community to offer work experience, interview practice and support for those seeking employment or internships.

There are many opportunities available to our sixth form students. We have 2 weekly debate groups – science, current affairs / politics, where students engage in lively and well informed discussion that enriches their learning experience and provides them with invaluable intellectual challenge. These groups are run by the 6th form but we invite experts in the field to chair debates from time to time. Penglais is proud to be the Wales Debate Champions of 2017 and are looking forward to competing in the British finals in April.

Penglais benefits from the 5x60 programme and our ambassadors work closely with Catrin, our 5x60 officer, to promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage participation in sport. We have a sixth form Hockey team and encourage students to organise sporting events.

We are grateful to Aberystwyth University for their support of our students. We have access to the university gym during non-contact periods and are able to draw on the expertise of university staff and students in organising events such as crisis simulation events and model UN conferences.

We invite applications from our students for the position of Prefect annually. We encourage our pupils to take responsibility for aspects of school life and we have peer support programmes, maths schemes and restorative justice that are run and managed by the prefect team.

We are not magic weavers and any success is the result of the hard work, grit and determination of our students. Our motto is ‘if you think you can, or if you think you can’t then you are probably right!’ We take inspiration from the poem Invictus that Mandela would recite daily during his incarceration. We encourage our students to realise that success is a decision, that once they accept that learning is a journey and that they are at the wheel, they can go wherever they please.

Whatever your goal, if you are prepared to put in the work, we will do everything we can to make it a reality. If you would like to learn more about what we do then please refer to our prospectus or call Donna, our Manager on 01970 621163 to book a visit – we would be very happy to meet you and show you our school.
