Hello and a warm welcome to Ysgol Penglais School! We understand that the move from primary to secondary school can bring a variety of changes and challenges for all children. This section of the website aims to explain the process at Ysgol Penglais School and to answer some of your queries. We hope you find it useful.
The period of transition can be quite daunting for students (and parents/ guardians) and we aim to provide support and guidance to Year 6 and Year 7 students in order to make their transition and integration as easy as possible.
We are a very happy and successful school. Our students are challenged and motivated to achieve their full potential in a caring, supportive and inclusive environment.
In Year 7 there are usually 6 form groups and teaching groups. Students register with their form tutor every day in their tutor group. Wherever possible their form tutor will stay with the tutor group for their first five years at Ysgol Penglais School. They will build a relationship with their group and will be on hand to help, support and advise as students develop during their time with us.
Teaching groups are mixed ability, though students are set in Maths and Welsh/Cymraeg. Design and Technology groups are also different as the groups are slightly smaller as workshop space allows.
Transition Evening Meetings
As part of our Transition activities this year we would like to invite you to a webinar on Wednesday evening 7th July 2021 at 6pm in order to give you a short presentation and answer any queries that you may have regarding your child’s transition to Penglais School in September. Under normal circumstances we would have invited families into school – but those meetings have had to be put on hold due for now. We look forward to meeting you on Wednesday. If you have any questions, but are unable to make the webinar then you are welcome to contact Mrs Thomas at the school or email firstname.lastname@example.org.

In October we hold an Open Evening giving you the opportunity to see what we do and to visit all departments and speak to staff. This is always a lively and enjoyable evening. There is an opportunity to hear from the Headteacher and to ask questions.
This year, we are holding a virtual open week instead of the usual Open Evening. Please click on the link to take you to the Open Week.
Visits to Primary Schools and Induction Days 2020
In the summer term the Pastoral team will usually visit all primary schools in order to speak to students and introduce the school. However these will not be arranged during the summer of 2020 due to restrictions.
We will speak to Year 6 teachers and Senior Leaders and ALNCos (Additional Learning Needs Coordinator) at the primary schools in order to ensure that we know about our students and that we make appropriate arrangements for their transition to us.
We will be setting up a Team on Hwb for those joining us in September 2020. There will be activities and information shared on this Team. We will also be sending out the information packs and activity book to help prepare for the transition to us. If you have any questions then you can contact the school through the email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Students can ask questions via the posts on the Team if they wish to do so.
As soon as we have any more information on arrangements then we will let you know.
It is possible to get a grant from the Welsh Assembly to help with uniform costs, more information is available of the Ceredigion website. You can find the links by clicking here.
