Cymraeg as a First Language is a thriving, high achieving department and as part of the Languages Faculty, we are committed to promoting high quality teaching as well as maintaining a strong Welsh ethos.
Students follow a varied curriculum in Key Stage 3 where many aspects of Welsh history, culture and language are studied. Alongside this, students develop a range of skills from year 7 that lead to the GCSE specification for the Language qualification. We believe that extra-curricular enrichment opportunities are vital to students’ development of both language and understanding but also to develop a maintain Welsh ethos and an appreciation of the country and its language and heritage.

Welsh Second Language is a vibrant, successful department and as part of the Languages Faculty, we are committed to providing excellent teaching and have high expectations of the students. In KS3 many interesting and thought-provoking subjects are studied such as Health, Leisure, the Environment and the Local Area. Embedded in each scheme of work are the fundamentals of language learning with a mix of Oracy, Extended Writing and Comprehension Key Pieces. Each theme studied in KS3 feeds into the GCSE specification for the Language qualification. We believe that a healthy interest and knowledge of not only the language, but also Wales and the local area, embeds a sense of pride of being Welsh enhancing and strengthening the Welsh ethos within Ysgol Penglais School.

Our teaching at key stages 3 and 4 is based on a conviction that learners studying a modern foreign language develop transferable skills such as confidence, communication, problem solving and creativity. During Key stage 3, students follow the Studio texts and develop the ability to communicate with French speakers in a variety of contexts relating to everyday life in a school setting. During the linear GCSE course, students deepen their understanding of the language and improve their grammatical accuracy. They are examined on their writing, speaking, listening and reading skills. We encourage our learners to broaden their horizons and develop a cultural knowledge of the French-speaking world. Learners have the opportunity to develop a solid, linguistic base on which to prepare them for future language study. Undoubtedly, international language skills raise their employability in an ever-increasing global jobs market.
